Radiological Societies
Listed here are a number of the Radiological Societies related to Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Disease, with which BSGAR has forged links. Under each heading you will find a short description of the society, links to their website and contact details where available. To shortcut to a particular society please click on the relevant Society from the Contents list.
The BSGAR Liaison Officer, Mac Armstrong, coordinates the liaison between BSGAR and these societies, including developing any contribution from BSGAR to the scientific programme for the Societies' annual meetings. Mac will be communicating news from each society which may be of interest to BSGAR members via the Members Forum and the News section of the BSGAR website.
European Society of Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Radiology (ESGAR)
The European Society of Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Radiology (ESGAR) is a not-for-profit, educational and scientific organisation founded by radiologists working in close association with gastroenterologists, hepatologists, abdominal surgeons, pathologists, and other allied specialists. Its members have a special interest in the imaging and treatment of patients with diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and associated abdominal organs. The Society was founded in 1989 and was initially named "The European Society of Gastrointestinal Radiologists". The current name was adopted by the Society in 1994. As a European Subspecialty Society, ESGAR is an institutional member of the European Society of Radiology (ESR).
ESGAR holds an annual meeting in a different European country each year. The Postgraduate Course covers a specific topic each year but all annual meetings are devoted to the main theme of "Abdominal Imaging and Intervention". The meetings consist of invited educational lectures, workshops, scientific presentations and satellite symposia structured in conjunction with ESGAR's industrial partners.
The annual meeting and postgraduate course of 2012 will take place in Edinburgh/UK from June 12 - 15.
Venues for subsequent ESGAR meetings are:
2013: Barcelona, Spain
2014: Salzburg, Austria
ESGAR promotes teaching across Europe in specific aspects of its discipline by means of peripatetic hands-on workshops with a high teacher to student ratio. Currently ESGAR runs the following hands-on workshops:
- CT Colonography (CTC)
- image-guided ablation (IGA)
- liver imaging.
In 2012 a new workshop series on Hot Topics in Abdominal Imaging is being introduced. The first workshop will be a Pancreatic Workshop scheduled to take place in Verona/IT in March 2012.
Details of the ESGAR annual meeting and workshops can be found in the courses section of the BSGAR website or via the ESGAR website: www.esgar.org
